DAY CONFERENCE - 22nd May 2010
ORTHOTICS, BIO-MECHANICS & GAIT ANALYSIS
NHS and private physiotherapy or musculo-skeletal practitioners are invited to attend an all-day conference examining the recent changes in the orthotic assessment and treatment of the lower-limb. Particular emphasis will be paid to the bio-mechanical impact of joint instability and the effect of poor muscular control on Gait. Several case studies will be presented to aid and encourage open discussion.
Review the phases of normal gait and understand their relevance when assessing deformity or poor muscular control.
Appraise the various key foot profiles responsible for a wide range of postural abnormalities and understand how each foot pathology creates an easily recognisable bio-mechanical deficit.
Participate in the two afternoon practical workshops, assessing the gait and posture of your colleagues, proposing treatment alternatives to restore optimal bio-mechanical gait and restore the dynamic control of the kinetic chain.
Understand the benefit of accurate orthotic prescription and the high importance of multi-disciplinary team-working to enable the optimal rehabilitation of your patient.
TIMETABLE
09.00 - 09.30 Coffee and Registration
09.30 - 10.00 Introduction
10.00 - 10.30 Gait Analysis
An introduction to the characteristic phases of gait, reviewing case studies, reflecting on the impact of posture and alignment on gait.
10.30 - 11.00 Pathological Foot Types
Appraisal of calcaneal valgus/varus, fore-foot varus/valgus. equinus ankle, hypermobility and identification of lower-limb abnormality.
11.00 - 11.15 Quiz
11.15 - 11.30 Coffee
11.30 - 12.30 Bio-mechanics & Orthotics
A review of recent changes in the Orthotic treatment of postural variances with particular attention to bio-mechanical assessment.
12.30 - 13.00 Lunch
13.00 - 13.45 Practical - Bio-mechanical Foot Assessment
Join in for the 1st practical workshop and assess lower limb joint motion and alignment. Observe the foot as a dynamic propulsive mechanism and understand the nuances of its movement.
13.45 - 14.30 Practical - The Effect of Gait on deficient Bio-mechanics
Continue your participation in the 2nd practical workshop reviewing the impact of gait on previously identified postural abnormalities and their impact on the kinetic chain and joint stability. Propose treatment alternatives to restore the dynamic control of the kinetic chain and optimise gait.
14.30 - 14.45 Quiz
14.45 - 15.00 Coffee
15.00 - 15.30 Casting Demo
15.30 - 16.30 Open Forum Discussion and Round-up
